Welcome letter 2009-10 season

Welcome to the U11s team page.  Your coaches Jerry, Paul, Phil & Paul welcome you back for what will hopefully be a fun and successful season.

This is season will see the players move forward in their rugby education with the introduction of some new positions and some slight changes in rules.  The most important changes are as follows:

- Each team will have 12 players.  We have added 2 Second Row forwards and a Full Back since U10’s.

- All re starts will be by a drop kick which must go 7 metres.

- Kicking out of hand is allowed ( no kicking of a loose ball on floor) e.g. drop kick or punt.

- After scoring a try a kick at goal will take place

The following are still not allowed at this age group:

  • Hand offs

  • Quick throw ins

  • Quick penalties after a penalty at a scrum

Also players must retire immediately 7 metres after a penalty has been awarded against them. This in effect means that teams will be able to take quick penalties. Also you can kick for touch for penalties

Suggested / recommended equipment:

  • Gum shield - a boil in hot water type will be good enough. Available in most good sports shops.

  • Rugby shirt - if you are new to rugby these are much tougher that football shirts which would be easily torn.

  • Rugby shorts - much tough than football ones ( white for matches- perhaps a black pair for training sessions)

  • Newport socks - for matches

  • Water bottle - with their name on it

  • Suitable clothing if weather is bad or they are "on the bench" at any time during a match.

  • The only gloves that can be worn are IRB approved "stick mitts " fingerless style gloves.  IRB approved head guards and/or shoulder pads may be worn in training and matches. No other padding or head gear / hats should be used during contact sessions on health & safety grounds.

  • A Base Layer. Designed to be worn beneath rugby body armour, team strips or just on its own, 'Base Layer' is skin-tight yet flexible is very useful as are base layer shorts.

  • Those playing in the front row might wish to consider playing with shin guards

  • Rugby / football boots - please note although blades are not outlawed in rugby they are not advisable due to the injuries they can cause and the poor grip they offer. Boots must be fitted with rugby studs which differ from football studs.  Rugby studs are larger and made of metal which are safer than the plastic ones used in football.

We will be going on tour in spring 2009 date to be confirmed as is the location. Hopefully as many as you as possible will be able to make it.
