Under 9s - Wirral Tour 2008

With the majority of the U9s squad on tour, Newport turned up with sufficient numbers to give Caldy 2 games on Saturday morning. The home side were following on from a strong performance in a local festival the week before and with Newport suffering recently from some disappointing defeats against Stafford and Telford, Caldy were looking to take both victories. However from the start in the first game Newport moved the ball around and won the majority of the possession at the breakdown. With a hard thought game and tries from the Newport forwards the touring side ran out clear winners against all expectations.
The second game went very much the same way, however Newport lack of passing meant that they missed try scoring opportunities and they were only able to pull off a draw.

The side showed little effect of the late Saturday night and turned up at the Wirral on Sunday morning buoyed by their success the day before. With the numbers they were able to play a match of 4 quarters. Wirral proved to be not a strong as Caldy and in the first quarter were unable to get out of their half, with Newport running in a number of tries. Newport’s strong performance continued throughout the morning and they left winning 3 and drawing 1 of the quarters.
Newport came away from the weekend undefeated. A testament to very good rugby being played especially in the forwards.
The man of the tour award was presented to David Taylor who scored 3 tries over the weekend.
The player of the year award was also presented to Jack Byrd, who has shown great commitment and ability over the last season.
