Under 13s vs Lichfield - 22nd February 2009

With both sides missing a few players due to half term it was really pleasing to see 28 lads turn out for Newport. This presented a few logistical difficulties, but nice ones to be facing, and our visitors kindly agreed to play three periods to ensure we could utilise our full squad.

The first period was a keenly contested affair with some of the less experienced players being asked to play out of position against a strong Lichfield side. There was lots of good tackling and a very impressive performance by the forwards at the set scrum but Lichfield's experience in the backs began to tell. Their organisation in midfield, and pace out wide, was just too much to withstand and they scored a number of tries by spinning the ball wide quickly.

The second period saw the introduction of all 13 subs (nothing like continuity!) and lads familiar with the positions they were being asked to play in.  Despite missing several of their regular three-quarters Newport now matched Lichfield for organisation and pace. Another keenly contested 20 minutes ensued but the defences had the upper hand and this period ended nil - nil.

The third session saw more substitutions to spread the match time around. Again a very close contest but the deadlock was broken by Luke Roberts who broke Lichfield's defensive line and used his speed to score under the posts.  This was later followed by a well deserved try for the visitors capitalising on sustained pressure and the third period ended one try a piece.

A good morning's rugby with some excellent play by both sides despite the absence of key players.
