Newport U11’s V Bridgnorth - 7th February 2010

Newport U11’s got off to a belated but winning start as they beat a committed Bridgnorth team by 30 points to nil.  Following the disappointment of two cancelled fixtures in January the Newport squad were extremely keen to get a match under their belt and despite the muddy conditions at Bridgnorth, which made it difficult to play running rugby, Newport managed to run in 6 tries.

The first came as a result of excellent handing amongst the backs.  Joe Scarisbrick managed to escape a tackle on the right wing, he made good ground before he drew the final tackler and handing a scoring pass to James Orchard.  Newports second was the result of excellent forward play which created a turnover.  The ball was quickly fed out to the backs where Henry Bradshaw scored the first of his 3 tries.  Newport continued to apply pressure and the first half finished with another try created by strong forward play when Sam Trevor managed to crash over following a series of drives by the pack.

The second half continued in the same vein and Henry Bradshaw scored his second following a strong forward drive.  Newport scored their fifth as James Humphreys made an excellent run down the Bridgnorth open side following a series of forward mauls.  There was still time for Henry Bradshaw to bag his third as Newport produced quick ball which found its way out to Jack Byrd who drew two defenders before making the pass which allowed Henry to power over.

The final score of 30 – 0 was a fair reflection of Newport’s dominance in all areas of the match and have given the team the confidence required as they enter a busy period.
