Newport U11’s v Widden
The fearless Newport U 11 team took to the field against a Widden team bolstered heavily with older players, the game was hard and fast with great skill being shown by both sides. The Newport lads came away with their pride in tact despite a 49-0 defeat.
The Newport forwards worked well as a team using Tom Porter, Barney Wilkinson and Sammy Bryan’s strength to drive the ball over the opposition line 3 times but were unable to convert the opportunities to points. George Carvell and Oliver Needs were instrumental in winning Newport’s share of the scrummages allowing Headly Baulf to deliver quick ball to the backs. James Mulhern created a blistering attack for the them down the touch line that was headed off into touch by the Widden players.
Newport defensive tackling was fully tested by the Widen attack with Alex Mayer, Oliver North and Sam Young committing wholeheartedly at every opportunity.
The Newport speed merchants Tyler Felton and Daniel Cattle supported by Robert Brench and Ryan Dawes were just not quite able to break through the Widden defensive line. . | Newport U11’s v Evesham U11s
Sunday saw Newport U11s playing Evesham in a picturesque, if windy, riverside setting, and returning to winning ways. The Newport pack applied the early pressure with hooker Mark Richards winning several Evesham scrums “against the head” to provide the platform for scrum-half Hedley Baulf to do the damage. Hedley was in rampant mood, keeping the Evesham defence guessing as to whether he’d spin the ball wide to launch the attack or go himself, and was rightly rewarded with three tries, one a superb solo effort leaving the Evesham backs floundering.
Some fine rucking by forwards Barney Wilkinson and George Carvell created more platforms for attack. It was not all one-way traffic and strong breaks by Evesham produced good defensive work by Daniel Cattle and Robert Brench.
The introduction of Sammy Bryan, Oliver Needes and Ryan Dawes after the first third saw no change in the style of play with Newport still scoring regularly. Kieran Farge joined the fray in the final third and provided good support from the wing for another of Hedley’s decisive breaks.
By now Newport had scored seven tries with Tom Porter, Sam Young, Alex Mayer and Tyler Felton adding their names to the scoresheet - with conversions by Oliver North, James Mulhern and five by Alex Mayer – one finding its way to the river!
Evesham, however, were not finished and in the final minute of the match made their pressure tell with a well deserved consolation try to give a final score of Newport 49 Evesham 7.
