Saturday v Widden Old Boys RUFC
Coming together for only their second match ever, the Newport Coaches and Dads team gave a sterling performance against a combined 2nd & 3rd team side from Widden, which at half time left the home side seriously reviewing their game plan.
Widden opened the scoring, but were sent reeling immediately with a terrific move from Newport which brought all of the backs into play and finished with a searing run by winger Ralph Humphries of between 5 and 110 yards (depending on how late in the evening you spoke to him) to score in the corner. This was followed by a push over try by Phil North, and a more conventional one by John Porter in response to score by Widden. The half time score was 21 v 15 to Widden.
The second half however was a different affair with Widdens cutting loose as the fifteen year disparity in average age of the teams took its toll. Making full use of the depth of talent on his bench, Bob Adams strove to make the right tactical changes but was unable to find the necessary formula – young legs!!
Newport did manage a fourth try late in the second half as a result of a fine individual effort by AJ Heath, making the most of Widden’s failure to clear a loose ball.
Many thanks from Bob Adams to everyone who turned out for this spectacular event, and he promises to be fit for next year. Many thanks too from all to Mark Kendal, Colin Sweeney, Ralph Humphries, Matt Scarisbrick and all who helped to organise another terrific tour.
