Newport RUFC Junior Section
Introduction to 2009/10 Season
Watching fellow atheletes (no laughing, please) at the World Athletics Championships, the junior section coaches at Newport RUFC are now making final adjustments to their preparation for the start of 2009/10 season. From 10.30am on Sunday 6th September the pitches at Forton Road will once again be occupied with the young rugby prospects of tomorrow, as teams at all age groups from under 7, right up to under 17 take to the field.
With the first two weeks of the season for the juniors (under 13 to under 17 age groups), and the first three weeks for the minis and midis (under 7 to under 12) dedicated to coaching and development, this is the best time for newcomers to the sport to join at any age group, as there is plenty of time to learn the rudiments of the game before matches commence. The coaching staff, most of whom are qualified to RFU Level one standard, are ready to provide the expert advice and support to bring players quickly up to a standard where they can take part in matches and enjoy the game.
Boys and girls between from the age of 6 are instructed in Tag Rugby which is a non-contact variant of the game for the first two years (under 7 and under 8), with contact skills being introduced gradually from under 9 through to under 12. From under 13 the games take on a closer resemblance to the game seen on TV, as teams of 15 play on a full pitch.
At regular intervals throughout the season, matches and tournaments are played against opposition from local clubs, with the older age groups also competing in cup competitions, at both home and away venues. In addition, and on the back of successful tours to Lancashire, the Cotswolds, the Wirral and Stratford in the last four years, there are plans to take touring teams from many age groups again this season.
And on top of all this, there are regular social events for the parents too!
And for more details check out the rest of the website, or just come along on Sundays at 10.30am.
